It’s cheaper to fix most HP office laser printers than buying new. Here’s why.

Wednesday, October 19th, 2016

We have been in the business of fixing printers and office machines for over 15 years. We have learned a thing or two about when it’s worth fixing or time to pitch it and get a new one.

INK JET PRINTERS

An inkjet printer makes sense for the vast majority of  home computer users, but if you print more than 2,000 copies per year you should consider an HP laser printer for much cheaper printing costs. We do not service inkjet printers at this time.

LASER PRINTERS

Ask yourself these questions when considering printer replacement or repair

  1. Do you have extra toner cartridges, drum units, and consumable items for the printer you have already?  If so, even a less expensive model may be worth repair.
  2. Is the machine a higher end model?  AS A RULE THE HIGHER THE MODEL NUMBER FOR A MACHINE THE CHEAPER THE TONER COST AND LESS REPAIR IT NEEDS.
  3. How much is it going to cost for repair in relationship to buying a  comparable new machine?

Some useful information:

You can’t get a brand new laser printer for less than $500 and expect it to last for more than 30,000 copies before needing costly parts.  A more expensive model will go around 100,000 copies between service.

All of the manufacturers at the time of this writing have scaled way back on toner yield while increasing the price.  See below.

After 15 years in the repair and toner business we only recommend HP laser printers for office use.

IT’S ALL IN THE TONER COST

  • HP 4000/4050/4100:$7.00 per 1000 copies for toner. Let’s use the venerable HP 4000 laser printer as an example of toner expenses.  This machine has been around for 15 years and while it may be slower than it’s newer siblings it still works great in a modern office when serviced properly. If you own one it would be crazy to buy a new black and white laser printer to replace it.  These machines typically go 100,000 copies between service!  An HP 4000/4050 toner cartridge C4127X has a page yield of 10,000 copies.  We sell this toner cartridge for $69.95.

  • HP P3015: $13.60 per 1000 copies.  This is a great current printer and one we certainly recommend.  It sells for around $700 new.  Let’s look at cost per page of this machine.  For the high yield toner CE255X you get 12,500 copies and our price for a quality OEM-compatible toner is $169.95.

  • HP PRO 1102: $29 per 1000 copies!  this is a small desktop laser printer that is reliable, quiet and inexpensive, but the toner expense? We sell this toner CE285A for $54.95 with a 1,600 page yield.

SEE HOW MUCH  YOU CAN SAVE!

  • HP 4050n. $70 per 10,000 copies
  • HP p3015n. $136 per 10,000 copies
  • HP 1102. $290 per 10,000 copies!  Now that’s a lot of money!

CONCLUSION

You can easily see the difference between a desktop laser printer and a true business machine.  Fix your older HP laser and save a ton!
